Title: Lewis and Clark Exploration Activity
Lesson: Here's an activity that I use to give my students an appreciation for what Lewis and Clark must have experienced on their trip across the country. We read how the explorers encountered many Native American tribes who according to Lewis and Clark, had many strange customs and traditions. In this activity, I introduce the students to a new tribe located in a place called, Koo-Roh-Nah Foon-Dah-Mihn-Tahl. In this land the natives practice very strange rituals that the students will have to document. One such ritual is that the native children stand every morning in groups and chant to a colored cloth before listening to the rantings of the tribal elders.
As you may have already figured out, the ritual described above is actually the daily routine of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. And the name of the place is actually the name of our school - Corona Fundamental. It's cool when the students finally figure it out.

I then take the kids on a field trip around the school, where the students start writing down what they see in the eyes of an explorer seeing bicycles, lockers, and drinking fountains for the first time.
Students will then write a journal of their adventures in the strange land where many of the natives walk around with metal on their teeth.
They also draw a map that details some of the major landmarks such as the hut where the natives learn about their tribal history.
The kids really do enjoy this activity.
I've attached my directions sheet.
