| Title: Pledge of Allegiance Activity Lesson: My eighth graders come in each year, and we recite the pledge every day. I ask them how many of them can say by heart, and of course all of them say yes. I then ask them how many can tell me what it means, and the hands come down. What we do in the next activity is I give them a worksheet that has the Pledge of Allegiance printed on one side and blank lines on the other side. I then have them get with a partner or go solo and re-write the pledge in 8th grade language using a dictionary or thesaurus. After about 15 minutes of them digging through a dictionary, I get the class back together, and we discuss what they came up with. |

| I use the overhead projector or Power Point to display the actual meanings of the tough words like indivisible, allegiance, republic, etc. Students write down the words on their paper. I use this paper as a test review later. I then have the students write their own pledge of allegiance. They, however, can choose whatever they want to pledge their allegiance - friends, school, family, skateboarding, ballet, softball, ice cream, etc. Students then create a poster with the pledge written neatly and creatively in the center of the page with images of their topic decorating the rest of the page. Students then present their pledge in front of the class. Note: Their pledge must be in the same format as the original Pledge. "I pledge allegiance to the softball, and to the game for which it stands..." Thanks, Sam Grade Level: 8th Grade Subject: History School: Corona Fundamental Int. Location: Corona, CA |
